Jamaica tacos are meaty, slightly tangy, and incredibly delicious. They are made with jamaica flowers also known as hibiscus after the agua fresca (iced tea) has been made. They are a true mouth-watering experience!
Jamaica Tacos (Hibiscus Tacos)
Tacos are eaten worldwide and are one of the most popular Mexican dishes. Most countries are used to having mainly meats in their tacos but in Mexico, it’s a different story. Traditionally, the people of Mexico eat a wide variety of tacos stuffed with beans, mushrooms, corn, greens, crickets, zucchini blossoms, and Jamaica flowers! Mexico is a large country so expect the cuisine to change depending on which region you visit.
Jamaica tacos are one of my favorites because they resemble shredded beef which catches the attention of many. They’re also my favorite because you get a nutritious drink and a healthy meal out of this incredible hibiscus flower, making it zero waste and eco-friendly.
Jamaica Health Benefits
Recent studies show that eating hibiscus flowers may help reduce blood pressure and fight inflammation. The Hibiscus flower is packed with anthocyanins! Anthocyanins are pigments found in red, purple, and blue fruits and vegetables. They are part of a larger category of plant-based chemicals called flavonoids.
Anthocyanins may help reduce blood pressure, according to a review of 66 studies! They help release nitric oxide from cells within the blood vessels, which helps lower blood pressure.

Ingredients for Jamaica Tacos
- Jamaica flower: You can buy dried hibiscus flowers at any Mexican market or online. You will use the soaked and drained jamaica flowers used to make agua de jamaica.
- Onion: Pan-frying the onion gives this recipe the best flavor. I recommend using white or yellow onion for best results.
- Vegetable broth: I recommend using Better than Bouillon vegetable base. It’s a paste that can be used to make more than 10 dishes! Add a tablespoon to warm water and whisk it in to dissolve it well.
- Soy sauce: You can also use tamari, liquids aminos, or any umami-flavored sauce. This will add more meatiness and umami flavor to the tacos to make them extra satisfying.
- Garlic powder: I like using garlic powder for this recipe but feel free to use fresh garlic as well. If using fresh garlic, add in after the onion has cooked for a bit at the beginning of the cooking process. Make sure not to burn the garlic, cook for about 1 minute and no more before adding the hibiscus flowers.

Wow! Impressive! I was not expecting hibiscus to taste like meat. This is genius.
I was sketchy going into this but said might as well try it since I made the agua fresca. It was way better than I expected! With some salsa and other regular taco toppings, this was pretty good! I will make again for sure when I make the Agua
These were really good! We had them on corn tortillas, with salsa. My parents were very sceptical, but they really enjoyed it, even my picky eater dad who isn’t very open to trying new things 😁
You are the best! I hope you enjoyed your birthday weekend 🙂
Thanks, I certainly did!
I love the idea of reusing hibiscus flowers! The flavor and texture are incredible!
